our members apply an intersectional feminist* lens, influenced by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to explore the power dynamics that reinforce conditions of inequality, isolation and exclusion, and invite transformation through experimental collaborations.
our methods range from socially-engaged art, community mapping and transmedia storytelling, to service design and public interventions. our 10 members collaborate in ways that are informed by the symbiosis of lichens, fungi and algae: “a lichen is not a single organism; it is an association of many”.

recent highlights have included:building sustainable and care-full futures;re-mapping the possibilities and participants of public spaces;creating safe environments in/across digital worlds;decolonising and culturejamming cultural collections;rituals, exchanges & rewildings that explore our multispecies interconnections.
we love new projects - to collaborate, drop us an email anytime. we also invite you to join art / tech / nature / culture, a global inbox community for creatives across disciplines who are engaged in ecological regeneration.
let’s evolve from a society of 'me' to one of us. ✊

jess piettecaron wrightemma chetcutirene francis-mcbreartydr natalie hyacinthjoseph lilley at Holodeck james turner at stirchley printworks emma purshousethanks to historic england for supporting this project, and in particular, to katy hoskyn.
funded by everyday heritage grants: celebrating working class histories, historic england

OUTWORK is rooted in the heritage of women’s oral storytelling, referencing how working women's herstories are often shared anecdotally and passed down through a spoken tradition, rather than through more official archival channels. the project seeks to explore how women can make space to debate what work is, and could be.
OUTWORK tells the stories of women* employed at kenrick and jefferson (k&j) print works on west bromwich high street. the project explores working-class women’s relationships to work and social class.the project involved interviewing a cross section of k&j workers and researching personal and public archives, with the project mediating on how women can make space to debate what work is and could be.
OUTWORK culminated in a book published by multistory editions, outdoor exhibition and podcast of the interviews in September 2023.the resulting book (designed, printed and hand bound by joseph lilley / holodeck birmingham and available as a free pdf from multistory’s website) and the outdoor exhibition assemble images from the project participants’ personal archives; quotes from their interviews; and creative outcomes from two workshops charting the history of these working women’s lives, with a workshop hosted by stirchley printworks. Alongside, a new podcast produced by sound artist dr natalie hyacinth and narrated by wolverhampton city poet laureate (2020-2022) emma purshouse.

GENTLE DISMANTLINGS was a collaborative issue of DING x Branch magazines which invited a new generation of posthuman feminisms across the world to share their latest insights on emergent practices and futures ~ those which challenge the structural forces that prevent us from interacting with each other (and the six million species we live alongside!) in care and celebration.from carving out new cyberspace territories in the amazônia, to decolonial rewildings of ancient diversity hotspots in india's western ghats, the issue's 7 featured pieces explore how to foster a just, equitable and joyful transition through alternative means of kinship.the issue also includes a unique QR-code zine which folds out as a poster, for printing and sharing in community.this very special special issue combined the efforts of three organisations concerned with climate, tech and gender justice ~ superrr lab, green web foundation, and studio we&us. we are grateful to our brave collaborators for bringing this wildish labour of love to life with us.

THE RITUAL OF PRESCRIPTION
art installationjune 2020

artist:
molly bonnell

can the aesthetics of care act as a tool to reconsider medical routines in isolation?by crafting new and unfamiliar medical routines, such as taking prescription medicine, this project questions the societal and individual value placed on health and the systems that support it, as well as a reflection on the nature of medicine itself and its relationship to human ritual.this project was created while shielding in london during the first covid-19 lockdown.
healthcare is a human right. access to the systems that provide this care is essential.
in 2020, the nhs mailed letters to 1.5 million people in the uk deemed ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’, advising them to practice shielding measures in order to protect themselves from covid-19. one of the at-risk conditions was cystic fibrosis, a disease i have lived with my entire life.for the first time, many are confronted by the reality of their own medical vulnerability.the mundane routines of healthcare at home became elevated to the priority event of daily life.
however, there is simultaneously a lack of understanding of healthcare as we constantly, without a second thought, transform our bodies through medicine.
relying on domestic materials, such as sugar, the ritual of prescription is a series of speculative objects that amplify my personal healthcare rituals during this period of isolation with the aim to counter the current over-medicalization of healthcare and encourage a hypersensitivity to the ways we interact with and care for our bodies.

featured in: ‘care-full design sprints, online? addressing gaps in cultural access and inclusion during covid-19 with vulnerable communities in London and Tokyo’,C&T ’21: 10th international conference on communities & technologies,'new arts & humanities projects at the forefront of COVID-19 response', king’s college london, april 2020

how can cultural producers provide genuinely inclusive, remote experiences with/for isolated and vulnerable publics in times of social distancing? as theatres, museums and galleries closed their doors in london and in tokyo due to covid-19, the accessing cultural experiences (ACE) project brought together a rapid-response team of researchers and designers at king’s college london and keio university tokyo including kat braybrooke to explore the possibilities of cultural access in digital environments to fight loneliness and isolation. our aim was to design & facilitate a six-part virtual design sprint for digital spaces, utilising the rapid development approaches of open source projects.two groups of participants based in london and tokyo joined us from a wide range of cultural & community organisations including national gallery x, v&a, british museum, tate, royal opera house, age UK & spiral japan - and from july to october 2020, we worked across a range of digital platforms to develop innovative and practical concepts for remotely deliverable cultural experiences.
the project resulted in 12 workable prototypes that used existing, everyday & repurposed technologies to address the diverse needs and accessibility concerns of a range of hard-to-reach publics, who joined us as panelists and advisors. together, the prototypes represent examples of how a shared desire for empathy, intimacy, connection and creativity can unite project organisers, participants and publics alike - reinforcing the value of tackling isolation in times of crisis through creative approaches that invite communities to the table as collaborators.participant testimonials

“full, rich, urgent and a very useful space to think together in response to the current context.”
“a much needed and inspiring gathering and exchange at a time of isolation.”
“it’s been really inspiring, both in terms of content and format. thank you for the opportunity.”
“very insightful and thought provoking for my contribution to the cultural sector moving forward.”

making as national transformation?, 2018

in this community workshopping model crafted by studio we&us for engaging with difficult topics through material participation, sophie & kit brought together a focus group of chinese craftspeople, makers and artisans in the city of chengdu (which was about to instill its own compulsory recycyling laws for the first time). together, we explored their relationships to the circular economy - a vision of economic development where things are designed, made, used and reused within planetary boundaries (ellen macarthur foundation 2018) - and how this impacted their practice across the scales of policy, industry and community.
participants first examined where the materials that they used every day came from, and how these were associated with the circular economy as an intricate system of use, reuse and recycling - as well as government policies to encourage mass innovation and entrepreunership. each person was invited to engage in the emergent (and at the same time, ancestral) system of a circular economy in china in an embodied way, by taking on the role of an entity within the chinese system of industrial production such as transport, design and/or manufacture. speaking from the perspectives of these roles, participants imagined together what a completely sustainable system might look, feel and sound like.
these experiments built a new model for a collaborative, hands-on environment for all to explore complicated concepts and systems thinking, with participants thoughtfully reflecting on their own perceptions of what it means to be ‘circular’ through material participation.

FEMINIST FUTURES is a participatory art project that advocates for just and sustainable futures of the internet. how can we re-imagine the internet from a feminist perspective? And how can we translate our vision into practice?

in workshops, participants discuss the current issues of the Internet, and then re-imagine them through stories, comics, or poems. what results is an open archive of alternative visions of the internet, that provide strategies for meaningful change.
over the last year, more than 50 authors in various languages and from all around the world have contributed their visions for a feminist future.

this multilingual editon of the magazine BRANCH collated different perspectives that critiqued technocapitalism and technological solutionism, and envisioned pathways for just transition to sustainable and equitable infrastructures.
from the editors: “as a place of both resistance and rest, the walled garden provided our meeting with a space to breathe and think differently about the entrenched challenges we are facing as a planet, exacerbated by capitalist and extractive technologies. in this edition, you will find pieces born of those conversations, grouped into four sections. they represent different voices from the burgeoning community of researchers, practitioners, and funders whose work on technocapitalism, just transition, and sustainable and equitable infrastructures envisions tech in the service of equitable climate action.”
